The Pieckback ( Russian Хребет Вильгельма Пика Chrebet Wilgelma Pika ) is a short mountain range in the East Antarctic Queen Maud Land . It rises on the east side of the Humboldtgraben in the Petermann chain of the Wohlthat massif .
It was discovered from the air during the German Antarctic Expedition in 1938/39 under the direction of polar explorer Alfred Ritscher . Further aerial photographs and measurements were made during the Third Norwegian Antarctic Expedition (1956–1960). The name after Wilhelm Pieck (1876–1960), then President of the GDR , was made by participants in a Soviet Antarctic expedition from 1960 to 1961.
