The World Policy Conference (WPC) is an annual conference founded in 2008 by Thierry de Montbrial .

history

In 2008 the conference was founded by the Ifri , on the initiative of its President and founder Thierry de Montbrial. Montbrial is a French economics professor, engineer, co-editor of various center-right media, a member of several academic academies and has been a member of the steering committee of the Bilderberg Conference since 1976 . He worked in various functions on strategic studies on behalf of French government bodies and international non-governmental organizations .

The World Policy Conference claims to promote the development of an organization for world leadership. A new form of world leadership that brings together decision-makers, experts and opinion leaders at a high level is supposed to adapt to the challenges of the 21st century.

The World Policy Conference is an independent organization with the aim of improving all forms of government and promoting a more open, prosperous, fairer and more respectful world towards the diversity of states and nations .

The annual gathering, which brings together political and economic leaders, diplomats, civil society representatives, experts and journalists from all over the world, debates constructive solutions to important international or regional challenges in an atmosphere of trust and tolerance.

The first conference took place in Evian ( France ) from November 6th to 8th, 2008.

Basis of the conference

The World Policy Conference was founded on three main principles.

  • The existence of globalization : The World Policy Conference fits into the framework of globalization and growing dependency between states at the political, economic or environmental level. In its first version in 2008, the WPC dealt with the financial crisis that first broke out in the United States and has not left a continent since then.
  • International relations are still focused on relations between states: Despite the globalization phenomena, the world is still organized according to political units, hence states. States are characterized by a territory , a population, and a government . They share a common culture , common values, institutions and have defined boundaries .
  • The construction of a new international system - or its government - does not only affect states : In order to ensure good world governance, states must reform and work together. But they can't be the only ones going in that direction. NGOs and think tanks such as the Ifri should participate in this process. Each member should be allowed to express their own opinion and influence the choice through the correct decision-making process. Ultimately, both world institutions ( UN ) and regional ( African Union , Arab League ) and specialized institutions ( IMF , World Bank , International Energy Agency , World Health Organization ) must adapt to the new order and find appropriate solutions.

Working method

The three meeting formats - that is, the plenary sessions, the workshops and the lunch or dinner debates - promote constructive interactions at a high level between the private sector and the public sector. The aim of the conference is to fuel public debate. During a plenary session, every participant has the same right to speak, no matter how influential their country is.

Each participant is selected individually according to various criteria such as regional, functional or media-related factors. The number of participants is limited to enable constructive debates. Each participant can express himself freely and informally. In this way, an informal exchange is to be ensured at a high level.

Paper size

A report with the main contributions will be published for each edition of the conference. He presents the profiles of all participants and all partners. The conference highlights are illustrated with many pictures. Several thousand copies of the report in English and French are distributed worldwide every year . It can also be downloaded as a PDF file from the WPC website.

Electronic format

The WPC website not only provides material from previous conferences, but also information regarding the upcoming conference.

1. WPC TV: WPC TV provides interviews and explanations from the participants.

2. Conference reports: After each conference, the debates are published in digital format. All speeches are available on video and in text format.

Social networks

The WPC can be followed on Twitter , Facebook , Flickr , Pearltrees and Pinterest . In addition, the entire content of the conference is saved in video format and is available on YouTube .
