Lazard Ltd is a US investment bank headquartered in New York City . It is one of the world's largest investment banks with offices in 26 countries and founded the Mergers & Acquisitions business as a specialty of investment banking in the 1960s . The Asset Management division had assets under management of $ 240 billion in September 2018. Lazard Ltd should not be confused with the former German-Jewish banking house " Lazard Speyer-Ellissen ".

history

Lazard was founded in New Orleans in 1848 by the Alsatian - Jewish brothers Alexandre, Simon and Elie Lazard as the trading company Lazard Frères & Co. (it was initially a haberdashery shop ) and relocated to San Francisco , California during the gold rush . The three brothers had only immigrated to America in 1848. In San Francisco they got into the gold trade and soon after founded the bank with its headquarters in New York.

In the second half of the 19th century, further branches were opened in New York as well as in Paris and London . In 1880, Alexandre Weill, a cousin of the founders, took control of the company. In 1919 the three houses in New York, Paris and London became de facto independent companies due to British legislation regulating foreign control of companies. Since 1919, Pearson was instrumental in the London house. After the Second World War there were various attempts to regroup and merge the Lazard banks, but the final merger did not take place until 2000 after the Pearson shares were taken over.

Under the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933, the New York house decided entirely on investment banking and specialized in company mergers and acquisitions. Today Lazard is the sixth largest investment bank for M&A (by transaction value). In 2005, the company's senior executives gained a majority shareholding and the company went public on the New York Stock Exchange . In the same year Lazard employed over 2,500 people in North America, Europe and Asia.
