John Lipsky

John P. Lipsky (born 1947 in Cedar Rapids , Iowa ) is an American economist .

Life

Lipsky, a graduate of Wesleyan University , earned an MA and Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University .

He worked as an investment banker for JP Morgan , Chase Manhattan Bank and Salomon Brothers .

Before his time as an investment banker, Lipsky had already worked for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a decade , including from 1978 to 1980 as the IMF representative in Chile.

From September 1, 2006 Lipsky was Deputy Head of the International Monetary Fund. On May 12, 2011, Lipsky announced his resignation from the IMF at the end of August 2011. From September to November 2011, he was special advisor to the Managing Director.

Lipsky temporarily headed the IMF after the managing director Dominique Strauss-Kahn came into custody because of private legal problems and resigned from his office on May 18, 2011. On July 5, 2011 Christine Lagarde succeeded Strauss-Kahn.
