Ivar Rooth

Ivar Rooth (born November 2, 1888 in Stockholm , † February 27, 1972 ) was a Swedish banker and from August 3, 1951 to October 3, 1956, executive director of the International Monetary Fund .

Rooth studied law and economics at the University of Uppsala and the University of Berlin (HU) . In 1914 he became in-house counsel at Handelsbank Stockholm . In 1915 he took over the management of Handelsbank Stockholm and became its vice-president. In the further course of his career, Rooth took over the position of managing director of the Swedish underwriting bank in 1919 and in 1920 he took over the management of the Stockholm mortgage bank . Rooth was appointed President of the Swedish Reichsbank in 1929. In 1948 Rooth resigned from this post as a protest against the low interest rate policy .

Ivar Rooth was also director of the International Settlement Bank in Basel from 1931 to 1933 and 1937 to 1949 . In 1951, Rooth led a mission to Iraq for the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development . From August 3, 1951 to October 3, 1956 he was Managing Director of the IMF . He was also director of the investment committee of the United Nations Pension Fund from 1947 to 1961 . He also headed the monetary authority in Kuwait from 1960 to 1962 .

He spent his old age in Lidingö , Sweden, from the early 1960s .
