Ban Khinak is a settlement on the eastern bank of the Mekong in southern Laos . Administratively it belongs to the Khong district of the Champasak province . The place is located in the middle of the Si Phan Don area ( four thousand islands ) and is the second largest settlement in the region after Muang Khong, which is about 10 km to the north .
The neighboring towns are Hat Xai Khun in the north and Nakasong and Set Tai in the south. Opposite Khinak is the island of Don Som in the river . Earlier that ran national road 13 directly through the town, now it bypasses some of it a hundred meters to the east.
In the past, Khinak gained some importance as the last usable port north of the Mekong Falls ; Boats ran regularly between Pakse and Khinak. The Lao- Cambodian border area south of the village was long considered unexplored and unsafe.
Most of the residents of Khinak are fishermen . There are a few tourist accommodations in the village.
