Pakse , also Pakxe , French Paksé or Pakxé , Lao ປາກ ເຊ , ALA-LC : Pāk Sē , pronunciation: [pȁːk séː] translates as "mouth of the Se river"; is with 119,848 inhabitants (2010) the third largest city of Laos and the capital of the Champasak province in the south of the country.

Geographical location

Pakse is located at the mouth of the Xedon (also Sedon ) in the Mekong and administratively only on the left side of the Mekong, with the villages on the other side of the Mekong growing strongly since the construction of the Lao-Japanese bridge . Pakse is surrounded by low mountains mainly to the southwest and northeast.

Administrative structure

In the administrative division of Laos, there is no city ​​of Pakse , but the district of Pakse , which includes the unofficial city of Pakse as well as the surrounding, non-urban areas. The Pakse district is again completely divided into 42 villages. Some of them are:

History and meaning

Champasak Palace

The city was founded in 1905 by the French administration of the Indochina colony . For some time it was the residence of Ratsadanay , the last Prince of Champasak to be deposed by the French . His son Boun Oum had a palace ( Champasak Palace ) built in the city from 1968 , but had to flee the country before it was completed.

Through the expansion of national road 13 to both central and northern Laos and the Cambodian border, through the expansion of the roads to the capital cities of the neighboring provinces of Salavan , Sekong and Attapeu, and through the construction of the southernmost of the three Mekong bridges in Laos, Pakse has become an economic center and Has become a trading hub of southern Laos.

Diagonally across from Red Square is the History Museum of the Champasak Province and the library of the Champasak Province in the immediate vicinity . Every year at the end of Lent at the end of October, dragon boat races take place on the Xedon below the French Bridge .

Both a Beerlao production facility and one of the Dao-Heuang coffee producer have set up shop near Pakse . The majority of Laotian coffee is grown on the Bolaven Plateau east of Pakse .

Almost all goods that are transported between northern and central Laos and the provincial capitals of Salavan , Sekong and Attapeu pass through Pakse.

From Pakse International Airport there are connections to Vientiane , Savannakhet , Luang Prabang , Siem Reap , Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City .

Road traffic

The Lao-Japanese bridge crosses the Mekong in the south of the city center and is one of the three Mekong bridges in Laos, along with the two friendship bridges in Vientiane and Savannakhet . In addition, the French Bridge to the west of the center and the Russian Bridge to the north span the Xedon . The National Road 13 crosses, coming from North and Central Laos, the French bridge leads through the city center and on to the border crossing Dong Krolor to Cambodia . At the airport, five kilometers northwest of the city center, a two-part, partly four-lane bypass road leads from the national road 13, which crosses the Russian Bridge and immediately to the south of it crosses the national road 13 again at a roundabout and near the junction of the national road 18 to Pakxong from National Road 13, nine kilometers southeast of the center, meets again with National Road 13. Education and Research

Numerous elementary schools, lower and upper secondary schools as well as vocational and technical colleges are located in Pakse, u. a. the Southern Financial College near the bypass and the Teacher Training College on National Road 13. The Champasak University , a branch of the Lao National University with headquarters in Vientiane, is located on a huge site near the southern part of the bypass .

The Champasak Province Hospital , which is the second largest hospital in Laos, and the smaller but more modern International Clinic on the same site are located on Road 1 .

Across from the evening market, the Pakse Pakse radio station produces radio , which is also broadcast from there and is broadcast over loudspeakers over the street and the square between the radio station and the evening market at certain times of the day.
