Bouasone Bouphavanh (born June 3, 1954 in Ban Tao Poun , Salavan Province ) was the Prime Minister of Laos from 2006 to 2010 . He was appointed by the National Assembly on June 8, 2006. He took the place of Boungnang Vorachith , who became Vice President. Since October 3, 2003, he was first deputy head of government, before that third deputy head of government and head of the State Planning Committee.

He was trained in the Soviet Union . He is part of the new generation of leaders of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party . He ranks seventh in the Politburo. In 1975, shortly before Vientiane fell to the Pathet Lao , he played a key role as a student activist against the previous regime. He is a protégé of the former party leader Khamtay Siphandone .

On December 23, 2010, Bouphavanh resigned surprisingly for family reasons, and was succeeded by the previous Speaker of Parliament Thongsing Thammavong .
