The Lao Brewery Company Ltd. (LBC) is a beverage manufacturer and operates the only major brewery in Laos , based in Vientiane . The main product is Beerlao brand beer . Thanks to high import tariffs , Beerlao has a market share of 98% to 99% in Laos.

history

The company was founded in 1971 as a joint venture between French and Lao businessmen under the name Brasseries et Glacières du Laos (BGL) and started production in 1973. The two products were Bière Larue for the local market and "33" export for export (Indochina).

During the communist takeover at the end of the Vietnam War , the company was nationalized in 1975 and changed its name to Lao Brewery Company, and launched the Bière Lao beer brand . The "33" export brand was continued until 1990 and Bière Larue until 1995, the latter being replaced by Beerlao in 1995 .

With the introduction of a market-oriented economic policy , there was another joint venture in 1985. The Laotian government had 49% of the shares; 51% owned Loxley PLC and Italian Thai PLC. Carlsberg Asia has held a stake in the company since 2002 , initially at 25% and from 2005 at 50%. In 2005 the company had 493 employees and was valued at $ 56 million. The company was the largest taxpayer in Laos in 2006. Due to the increasing demand for Beerlao, LBC opened a second production site in the Champasak province in May 2008 .
