Savannakhet ( Lao : ສະ ຫວັນ ນະ ເຂດ ; officially Muang Kaysone Phomvihane , Lao ເມືອງ ໄກ ສອນ ພົມ ວິ ຫານ , ALA-LC : Muang Kaisǭn Phomvihan , is the most Mekong capital in the province of Savannakhet in southern Laos you're after. Kaysone Phomvihane , the first Prime Minister of the Lao PDR ) and with around 120,000 inhabitants it is the second largest city in the country. Savannakhet is a commercial center with wood processing and food industries. There is river shipping, a bus station and Savannakhet Airport .
The nearby stupa That Ing Hang is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Laos. Savannakhet is known for finding dinosaur remains and is home to a dinosaur museum with an attached workshop for the preservation and replication of the bone finds.
North of Savannakhet is the Second Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge over the Mekong.
The city was renamed in 2005 in honor of Kaysone Phomvihanes , longtime general secretary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party , who became first prime minister after the communists came to power in 1975 and was president of the Laos DPR from 1991 until his death in 1992. Kaysone came from near Savannakhet.
According to the administrative structure of Laos , the city of Savannakhet is a district (muang) with the name Kaysone Phomvihane.
