Muang Khong is a small town in southern Laos in the Champasak province . With a few thousand inhabitants, the place is by far the largest settlement on the island of Don Khong and the administrative capital of the Khong district .
Muang Khong is located on the east side of the island on the banks of the Mekong , neighboring places are Ban Naa in the south, Ban Dong in the north and Muang Saen Nua , the next largest town on the island, in the west on the other side of the island. Across the river on the mainland is Ban Hat Xai Khun , which is connected to Muang Khong by a ferry.
The city, a French settlement during the colonial period, is considered the tourist center of the Si Phan Don area ( four thousand islands ) and offers a relatively large number of accommodations.
There are two Buddhist Wats in the village : Wat Phouang Keo ( Wat Kan Khong ), a larger and more modern building, and the smaller and much older Wat Chom Thong .
