Thierry de Montbrial (born March 3, 1943 ) is the founder and president of the French Institute of International Relations (Ifri), which was founded in 1979. He has been a member of the Académie des sciences morales et politiques (Academy of Moral and Political Sciences) since 1992 and is former chairman of the Institut de France . Thierry de Montbrial is also an associated member of numerous foreign academies. In 2008 he founded the World Policy Conference , of which he is chairman.

biography

He is the son of François de Montbrial, a former inspector general of the Banque de France, and Monique Lecuyer-Corthis. As the grandson of André Corthis, he married Marie-Christine Balling in 1967 - the daughter of Charles Balling ( Ecole Polytechnique 1935), who later became a film producer (StarDance Pictures). Thierry de Montbrial is the father of the lawyer Thibault de Montbrial and Alexandra Pilleux-de Montbrials.

education

Thierry de Montbrial is a former student of Ecole Polytechnique (1963), a former general engineer of Corps de Mines (1969) and a PhD in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley . He wrote his doctoral thesis on the temporal dimension of macroeconomic equilibrium, under the guidance of Professor Gérard Debreu .

career

As a general engineer of Corps des Mines (honorary general engineer since 1995), he headed the economics department of the Ecole Polytechnique between 1974 and 1992 . He was a professor at the Ecole Polytechnique (1973–2008) and held the chair for applied economics at the Conservatoire national des arts et métiers (CNAM) (1995–2008). Since 2008 he has been professor emeritus at the Conservatoire national des arts et métiers .

In 1973, Michel Jobert , then Foreign Minister, commissioned him to develop the Center d'analyse et de prévision (Center for Analysis and Forecasts). He became the first director of this center until 1979 when Jean-Louis Gergorin took over this position.

In 1979 he founded the Institut français des relations internationales (French Institute for International Relations (Ifri)). The Ifri publishes an annual publication (Ramsès) and the journal Politique étrangère .

In 2008, Thierry de Montbrial founded the World Policy Conference , an annual conference on global governance issues affecting decision-makers from political, economic and social levels. The last conference took place from November 20th to 22nd, 2015 in Montreux .

Thierry de Montbrial was President of the Austro-French Center (1985-2015). Between 1993 and 2001 he was the first president of the Fondation pour la recherche stratégique (Foundation for Strategic Research). He was also a full member of the Board of Directors of the Center d'études prospectives et d'informations internationales.

He is a member of the editorial committee of Foreign Policy magazine and is regularly represented in the media. He was also an editorial writer for the daily newspaper Le Figaro (1989–2001) and then became an associate editor of Le Monde (2002–2010).

It meets on the board of directors of various international companies and institutions. Among other things, he is a member of the International Advisory Board of Lafarge and Chairman of the International Advisory Board of the OCP Group (Morocco), and a member of the Board of Directors of the Renault Foundation . He was also a member of the Advisory Board of the Director General of the World Trade Organization in Geneva (2003-2005) and a member of the commission responsible for writing the book on the French national defense strategy (2007-2008). He was also a member of the executive board of the Bilderberg Conference (1976–2011). Since 2011 he has been a member of the Orientation Council of the Ecologie Avenir Foundation, which is chaired by Claude Allègre .

On an academic level, he is a member of the Advisory Committee of the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington , the Carnegie Moscow Center and the Advisory Council of the Stanford Institute of International Studies, the Editorial Board of Russia in Global Affairs in Moscow .

Academies

On June 29, 1992 he was appointed to the Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques and took over from Louis Joxe . In 2001 he was the chairman of this academy and was also chairman of the Institut de France . He is a founding member of the Académie des Technologies (2000).

He is a member of the Academia Europae (elected in March 1993), the Académie Royale of Belgium (elected in January 1996), the Royal Academy of Sweden (elected in May 1999), the Romanian Academy (elected in December 1999), the Academy of Sciences in Russia (elected in March 2003), the Academy of Sciences in Moldova (elected in January 2006), the Academy of Sciences of Bulgaria (elected in July 2006) and the Real Academia de Ciencias Económicas y Financieras in Spain (elected in 2008).

He is Doctor Honoris Causa of the Romanian Academy of Economic Studies (1996), the Academy of Sciences in Azerbaijan (2002), the University of Transylvania of Brasov in Romania (2003), the University of Galatasaray in Turkey (2004), the University of Chisinau in Moldova (2005), the State Institute of International Relations of Moscow in Russia (2007), the Universities of Bucharest in Romania (2011) from Iasi , also in Romania (2014) and the University of Sofia.

Thierry de Montbrial is Commander of the Legion of Honor , Grand Officer of the Ordre national du Mérite , Commander of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and has also been awarded many French and foreign medals. In 2003 he was also awarded the Société de Géographie Grand Prize for the entirety of his work.
