The Société de Géographie ( German  " Geographical Society " ) is a French learned society for the promotion and support of geographical research. It was founded on December 15, 1821 in the Hôtel de Ville in Paris , making it the oldest geographic society in the world. The 217 founding members included Georges Cuvier , Joseph Fourier , Joseph Gay-Lussac , Alexander von Humboldt , Dominique Vivant Denon and Jules Dumont d'Urville . The first president of the society was Pierre-Simon Laplace , the first general secretary Conrad Malte-Brun . His son Victor Adolphe Malte-Brun held this office from 1859 to 1866.

In 1879, at a congress in the Hôtel de la Société ( Boulevard Saint-Germain , N ° 184), the seat of the company since 1878, the construction of the Panama Canal was decided. The first Pan-Arab Congress was held here in 1913.
