Jean Louis Armand de Quatrefages de Bréau (born February 10, 1810 in Valleraugue , † January 12, 1892 ) was a French zoologist and anthropologist .

Live and act

Quatrefages de Bréau was born in Berthézène (municipality of Valleraugue in the Gard department ) as the son of a Protestant farmer. He studied medicine and natural sciences in Strasbourg , where he graduated as a doctor of medicine in 1832. Some time later he moved to Toulouse , where he practiced as a doctor. In Toulouse Quatrefages de Bréau became professor of zoology and founded the journal Journal de médicine et de chirurgie de Toulouse .

In 1839 he moved to Paris in order to better devote himself to his research. In 1842 Quatrefages de Bréau toured the coasts of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. In 1850 he received the professorship for natural history at the Lycée Napoléon . Five years later he became professor of anthropology and ethnography at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle .

In 1852 he was elected to the Académie des Sciences and on April 3, 1879 as a foreign member of the Royal Society . The Bavarian Academy of Sciences accepted him as a foreign member in 1864. Since 1891 he was an elected member of the American Philosophical Society . Quatrefages de Bréau published numerous scientific papers on the annelid worms . He later turned to anthropology. His work La Race prussienne on the "Prussian race" led to a polemical argument with Rudolf Virchow .
