Edme François Jomard

Edmé François Jomard (born November 22, 1777 in Versailles , † September 23, 1862 in Paris ) was a French geographer and Egyptologist .

Jomard took part as an engineer geographer in the campaign to Egypt , then took part in the editing of the Description de l'Égypte (vol. 1-6) in 1803-14 , became a member of the Education Committee in 1815 and a member of the Academy of Inscriptions in 1818 .

Since 1828 curator of the maps and plans at the royal library in Paris, he was appointed senior librarian in 1839 and held this position under Napoleon III.

Jomard was considered an authority on African studies. Its main scripts are:

  • Notices sur les lignes numériques des anciens Egyptiens (Paris 1816-19);
  • Parallèle entre les antiquités de l'Inde et de l'Égypte (Paris 1819);
  • Sur les rapports de l'Ethiopie avec l'Égypte (Paris 1822);
  • Recueil d'observations et de mémoires sur l'Égypte ancienne et modern (Paris. 1830, 4 vol.) And others

He also published the Monuments de la geographie (1842–62, 8 parts), a collection of old maps important for the history of geography, and edited Frédéric Cailliaud's Voyage à l'oasis de Thèbes (Paris 1820) and Bernardino Drovetti's Voyage à l'oasis de Syouah (Paris 1823).

The Paris Geographical Society has named one of its annual awards in his honor. In addition, he was accepted on January 24, 1861 in the Prussian order Pour le Mérite for science and the arts as a foreign member. From 1821 he was a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences . and since 1829 a member of the American Philosophical Society .
