Conrad Malte-Brun

Conrad Malte-Brun , actually Malthe Conrad Bruun (born August 12, 1775 in Thisted , Denmark , † December 14, 1826 in Paris ) was a Danish-French geographer .

Life

Malte-Brun was the son of the Justice Council and District Governor Adolf Christian Bruun and Anne Christine Lange (née von Hoff). When asked what he wanted to be, the boy replied: “I hope to go to Heiberg's side one day.” After graduating from school in 1790, he began to study theology at the University of Southern Denmark . Under the influence of the rationalist Otto Horrebow (1769-1823), whom he had met at the university, he began to question the social constraints, dressed according to his own taste and let his blond hair grow long, which he was nicknamed among the students ( Danish Jomfru Bruun 'Jungfrau Bruun' ) registered. He started a new course at the University of Copenhagen and in 1794 published the small weekly Vækkeren ('Wake Up' or 'Wake Up'), in which he printed Jean-Jacques Rousseau's views on equality and brotherhood. This publication caused outrage and so it had to be discontinued after only three issues. The publisher was fined, partially offset by the proceeds from the sale, because many wanted to read what he had written there. He published other pamphlets and leaflets, which eventually led to an indictment against him and, in 1800, to his banishment "Forvisning fra Kongens Riger og Lande" (expulsion from the king's kingdom and country).

As a result, Malte-Brun went to Paris . There he delivered a large description of the earth in sixteen volumes with the geographer Edme Mentelle from 1804-1807 , which despite its unequal weighting of the continents in France was long considered the best work in this subject. However, his work was limited to conveying geographical knowledge in France to the public rather than contributing to new knowledge himself.

From 1806 he was one of the main contributors to the Journal des débats (which at that time appeared under the name Journal de l'Empire ). The essays printed therein were published posthumously in 1828 under the title Mélanges scientifiques et littéraires . In 1808 he began work on the Annales des voyages, de la geographie et de l'histoire and in 1818 with Jean Baptiste Benoit Eyriès the Nouvelles annales des voyages .

His main work is the Précis de la geographie universelle (completed by Jean-Jacques-Nicolas Huot ) . He was also involved in the Dictionnaire de la geographie universelle . In 1821 he was a co-founder and first secretary of the Société de Géographie de Paris .

His second son, Victor-Adolphe , was also a geographer and wrote, among other things, the multi-volume work L'Allemagne illustrée .
