Volker Leiß

Volker Leiß (born March 11, 1966 in Birkenfeld (Nahe) ) is a German composer , musician and doctor .

Career

Volker Leiß began playing the recorder when he was five. He received his first lessons at the Steinfurt Music School. As a student at the Arnoldinum Steinfurt high school , he was a member of the student brass orchestra (euphonium). As a young student he was taught by Konrad Hünteler at the Münster University of Music from the age of 15 to 18 . He took part in the Jugend musiziert competition several times (including 1st prize regional competition 1985 and 2nd prize regional competition 1985 in Cologne).

In 1986 he was a founding member of the folk cabaret group Düwelskermes. Düwelskermes was an amalgamation of the three musicians and composers Günter Gall , Wolfgang Meyering and Volker Leiß.

Until 1994 he performed at approx. 600 concerts in Germany. a. as musical support from Hanns-Dieter Hüsch , with. In the late 1980s and 1990s he performed repeatedly at the Rudolstadt Festival and the Bardentreffen in Nuremberg.

Since 1990 he has been a member of the Emden folk group Spillwark, with whom he has concert tours a. a. undertook to the USSR. The broadcast of the concert was shown on Russian state television.

In the early 1990s he became a member of the project group "Prüß, Meyering, Leiß & Schmedeke", which represented ARD at the Sidmouth Folk Festival for the European Broadcasting Union. The concert was broadcast live to all EBU countries as well as Asia, which resulted in an estimated audience of 150 million people.

His song “As long as the memory lasts”, composed for the album “Tivoli” by Günter Gall & Düwelskermes, was ranked 9th in the best song list in July 1990, the TOP 20 of German-speaking songwriters .

In 1993 his first solo album, "Ballads of Birds", was released with his own compositions for recorder and accompanying ensemble. a. Canada, Mexico, Taiwan was released. The second CD was "Flute & Feather" in 1995 with a similar distribution.

On the occasion of the Protestant Church Congress in Stuttgart in 1999, Volker Leiß published the CD "Con Spirito" together with Matthias Kiemle.

In the same year a portrait of Volker Leiß was published in the trade journal “ Windkanal (Zeitschrift) ”.

In 2001 the "Bagno Suite" followed as a further original composition: a homage to the princely park in Steinfurt and the oldest free-standing concert hall in Europe Concert hall in the Steinfurt Bagno , in whose acoustics the accompanying CD was recorded.

In 2002 he received the Steinfurt District Culture Prize for special achievements as a musician, arranger and composer.

In 2003 the CD “Circus paximus” was released and in 2005 the CD “Winter”, festive Christmas music in collaboration with Hans-Ralf Waterkamp, ​​who has performed as a duo partner with Volker Leiss since 1997.

In 2005 the "Volker-Leiß-Band" with H.-R. Waterkamp, ​​Wollo Seidel and Thomas Krause, which stands for handmade rock and pop music and has given numerous concerts since then.

Since 2012 he has been a member of the “Zimmer Frei Kurorchester” for the WDR TV program “Zimmer Frei” with Götz Alsmann and Christine Westermann .

In 2013 the cooperation with Hammer Musik GmbH / Boulevard Records ended after the death of the company owner and the insolvency of the publisher. Since then, the works have been published by Carlin Music / Warner / Chappell Music ( Warner Music Group ) and "Edition Petone".

In 2015 the CD “Trust” with 14 pop ballads was produced in cooperation with Tommy Peters “Petone”, music producer from Hamburg, also a member of “Spillwark”. The CD is published by EMI / Sony Music.

In 2017, the Volker Leiss Band's first CD was released with the title "Take us home".

In 2019, the "Symphonie des Münsterland", a musical declaration of love to a wonderful region, was premiered by the Münster Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Thorsten Schmid-Kapfenburg and released on DVD and CD. The "Symphony" deals thematically with "Castles & Palaces", "Looms & Parklands", a "Pättkestour" and the "Peace of Westphalia". As an encore, there is the sustained work “City of Peace”.

Private

Volker Leiß is married and has four children. From 1986–1993 he studied medicine at the University of Münster and has been a general practitioner since 1998.
