history
WGY is one of the oldest stations in the USA. On February 20, 1922 at 7.47 a.m., the station started operating at 360 meters (approx. 833 kHz) with Kolin Hager on the microphone. WGY is located at the former headquarters of the General Electric Company , which founded the station. The first transmitter produced an output power of 1.5 kW on a T-Top long-wire antenna. In 1932 the station put its 50 kW transmitter into operation. Since listeners complained about insufficient reception, WGY built the highest transmission mast in the country at the time (625 feet high) in 1936 .
From 1924 to 1942, WGY also broadcast its program on the shortwave transmitters W2XAD with 25 kW and W2XAF with 40 kW. The signals were also to be recorded in Europe. In 1942 the two shortwave transmitters had to be made available for programs of the "Voice of America".
WGY later expanded its activities to include the WGFM VHF station and the WRGR television station on 60 Washington Avenue.
At the beginning of his career as a radio host, WGY was the second stop for Michael Smelstor, aka Mike Gallagher . The presenter, who is now broadcasting all over the US, hosted his first talk show here. He then went to WABC in New York City .
Since September 16, 2004, WGY has been the first AM station to broadcast HD radio digitally during the day (IBOC standard).
