WCNI ("For the Love of Music") is a college radio station in the American state of Connecticut . The “Listener Supported Station” is operated by Connecticut College Community Radio Inc. (CCCR) and broadcasts from the Connecticut College campus . The group of supporters is the “WCNI Radio Club”. With a non-commercial education contract, WCNI broadcasts with 2 kW ERP on VHF 90.9 MHz and streams its program into the network.

WCNI broadcasts over 50 different free form shows with musical styles ranging from folk to funk to polka and punk.

history

In the 1960s, a radio station started up on the college campus and wirelessly supplied the buildings and facilities of the educational institutions. In the early 1970s, the FCC rewarded the station's efforts to maintain a good radio program and in 1972 licensed an FM frequency with the callsign WCNI for the station.

During the Cold War, the proximity of the station to the US Navy submarine base on the Thames in Gales Ferry and the General Dynamics submarine shipyard in Groton played an important role and the station received the slogan "Ground Zero Radio" , as the region was a high priority as a target for Soviet nuclear strikes.
