Alba Maria Zaluar (born 2. June 1942 in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil ;. Died 19th December 2019 ) was a Brazilian anthropologist with a focus on urban anthropology and violence anthropology .

biography

Alba Zaluar was the youngest daughter of Biancolina Pinheiro Zaluar and Achilles Emílio Zaluar. She studied social sciences at the Faculty of Philosophy ( Portuguese Faculdade National of Filosofia (FNFi) ) of the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro . During this time she was involved in the "Center for Popular Culture" ( Portuguese Centro Popular de Cultura ) of the National Student Union ( Portuguese União Nacional dos Estudantes ).

After the coup in Brazil in 1964 , investigations by the military police began a period of political persecution of the FNFi students. Zaluar was forced to flee Brazil in 1965 and stayed out of the country until 1971. She lived most of this time in England, where she studied anthropology and urban sociology at the University of Manchester .

Upon her return to Brazil, she focused her research on folk culture , particularly the samba and the Rio de Janeiro Carnival . In 1974 she received her Masters in Social Anthropology from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. From 1979 to 1984 she developed and obtained her Ph.D. in social anthropology from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. At the same time, Alba Zaluar worked as a freelance lecturer at the Universidade Estadual de Campinas in São Paulo . Since 1995 Alba Zaluar has worked as a professor at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, where she coordinated the “Center for Violence Research” ( Portuguese Núcleo de Pesquisas da Violencia [NUPEVI] ) at the Institute for Social Medicine.
