Jasper is a city and also the county seat of Hamilton County in the US state of Florida with 4546 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Jasper is located approximately 130 km west of Jacksonville and east of Tallahassee .

history

The Pensacola and Georgia Railroad built a railway line from Live Oak via Jasper to Du Pont in Georgia in 1865 , which was finally closed in 1984. Another railway line, from Palatka via Jasper to Macon in Georgia, was built in 1885 by the Georgia Southern & Florida Railroad and is still used today for freight traffic. It was named after William Jasper , a hero of the American Revolutionary War.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 4546 inhabitants were distributed over 895 households. The population density was 891.4 inh / km². 46.1% of the population identified themselves as whites , 50.8% as African American , 0.3% as Indians and 0.5% as Asian Americans . 1.5% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 0.9% to several ethnic groups. 8.5% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 30.6% of all households and persons aged 65 or over lived in 31.8% of all households. 62.0% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.33 people and the average family size was 2.98 people.

11.6% of the population were younger than 20 years, 49.5% were 20 to 39 years old, 27.4% were 40 to 59 years old, and 11.6% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 33 years. 80.2% of the population were male and 19.2% were female.

The median annual income was $ 25,703, with 28.9% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 96.57% of the population and 3.43% spoke Spanish .

The Old Hamilton County Jail and United Methodist Church are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

Jasper is crossed by US Highways 41 ( SR 25 ) and 129 ( SR 100 ) and Florida State Road 6 . The nearest airports are in Georgia located Valdosta Regional Airport (around 50 km north-west) and the Gainesville Regional Airport (120 km south).

The crime rate in 2010 was 332 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There were three robberies, twelve assaults, 31 break-ins and 30 thefts.
