Middletown is a small rural town in Newport County , in the southeast of the US state Rhode Island on the island of the same name .
The name Middletown comes from its geographical location between Newport and Portsmouth . Middletown has not been part of Newport since 1731. During the American War of Independence , the town was sacked by the English in 1776 .
