Okeechobee is a city and also the county seat of Okeechobee County in the US state of Florida with 5621 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

The city is about 95 km northwest of West Palm Beach and about 160 km south of Orlando and is on the north shore of Lake Okeecho , whose name is made up of the Indian oka (water) and chobi (large), and is home to the radio station WYFR .

history

The city was founded in 1915. In April 1924 the subsidiary Florida, Western and Northern Railroad of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad was founded, which was to build a railway line from Coleman via Sebring and Okeechobee to West Palm Beach . The entire corridor was opened in January 1925.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 5621 inhabitants were distributed over 2051 households. The population density was 525.3 inh / km². 75.5% of the population identified themselves as whites , 9.1% as African American , 1.5% as Indians and 0.8% as Asian Americans . 10.8% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.3% to several ethnic groups. 25.2% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 30.6% of all households lived in 36.3% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 66.8% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.65 people and the average family size was 3.11 people.

27.9% of the population were younger than 20 years, 27.5% were 20 to 39 years old, 23.0% were 40 to 59 years old, and 21.5% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 36 years. 49.9% of the population were male and 50.1% were female.

The median annual income was $ 43,106, with 26.5% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 86.36% of the population and 13.64% spoke Spanish .

The Freedman-Raulerson House and Okeechobee Battlefield are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

Okeechobee is crossed by US Highways 98 and 441 and Florida State Road 70 . The Okeechobee Station is a station of the train Silver Star of the railway company Amtrak on the line from Miami to New York City . The Silver Meteor train passes through without a scheduled stop. The municipal Okeechobee County Airport is located directly north of the city. The nearest international airport is Palm Beach International Airport (about 100 km southeast).

The crime rate in 2010 was 422 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There was one rape, 17 robberies, 15 assaults, 74 break-ins, 296 thefts and ten car thefts.
