John Joseph Abercrombie

John Joseph Abercrombie (born March 4, 1798 in Baltimore , Maryland (according to other information: 1802 in Tennessee ), † January 3, 1877 in Roslyn , New York ) was an American brigadier general in the US Army during the Civil War .

Life

After attending school, Abercrombie entered the US Military Academy at West Point and graduated in 1822. After he was adjutant of the 1st  Infantry Regiment between 1825 and 1833 , he was promoted to captain in 1836 . He then served during the Second Seminole War from 1836 to 1842 and received the rank of major for his bravery during the Battle of Okeechobee . After being used in the western United States, he also served in the Mexican-American War from 1846 to 1848. During the battle of Monterrey there , he was wounded in September 1846 and was awarded the rank of lieutenant colonel for his bravery . He then took part in the siege of Veracruz and the battle of Cerro Gordo and was then in 1847 aide-de-camp of General Robert Patterson . In 1858 he founded Fort Abercrombie, named after him, in what was then the Dakota Territory .

When the Civil War broke out, he was stationed in Minnesota , participated in the Shenandoah campaign and as a unit commander in the battle at the Hoke Run . During the Peninsula Campaign between March and August 1862, he served as Brigadier General of the Volunteer Forces and, after being wounded in the Battle of Seven Pines in June 1862, was involved in the Battle of Malvern Hill in July 1862, as well as in various skirmishes during the retreat to Harrison's Landing . Between 1862 and 1863 he was a defender of Washington, DC , before becoming the depots in command in Fredericksburg in May 1864 . Shortly thereafter, in June 1864, he took part in the defense against the Confederate forces of General Wade Hampton III. , the so-called Hampton's Legion . After he received the brevet rank of brigadier general shortly before the end of the civil war, he resigned from active military service on June 12, 1865. After that he worked for some time at a military court .
