Del Rio is the district capital and seat of the county seat of Val Verde County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located in the southeast corner of the county in southwest Texas on the Rio Grande on the border with Mexico , opposite the Mexican city of Ciudad Acuña and has a total area of 40.0 km 2 , of which 0.1 km 2 is water.
history
The founding of the city goes back to Spanish immigrants who came from Mexico over the Rio Grande and settled here. The name of the settlement at the time was San Felipe del Rio . The colonization by Americans only began after the American Civil War . In 1883 the first post office was opened and the name was changed to Del Rio. In 1885 Val Verde County was formed and Del Rio was elected the seat of county government. Between 1963 and 1969, the Amistad Dam was built 19 km northwest of the city .

According to the 2000 census, 33,867 people lived here in 10,778 households and 8,514 families. The population density was 846.9 people per km 2 . The racial the population was composed of 77.08% White, 1.21% African American, 0.70% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, and 17.79% other ethnic groups. About 2.68% were mixed race and 81.04% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 10,778 households, 42.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.3% of them were married couples living together. 15.8% were single mothers and 21.0% were non-families. 18.7% of all households were single households and there were people living in 8.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.09 and the average family size was 3.56.
31.7% of the population were under 18 years old, 8.8% 18 to 24, 27.6% 25 to 44, 20.2% 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 94.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 89.6 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 27,387 , and the median income for a family is $ 30,788. Males had a median income of $ 27,255 versus $ 17,460 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,199. 27.0% of the population and 22.9% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 35.8% were children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 26.4% were 65 or older.
