The Amistad Dam (Amistad Dam) is a dam on the Rio Grande , it is located on the border between the United States and Mexico at the confluence of the Rio Grande with the Devils River , 19 km northwest of Del Rio , Texas . The name Amistad means “friendship” in Spanish.
Dam and power plants
The construction of the dam was agreed in a 1944 contract between the USA and Mexico and lasted from 1963 to 1969. The hydropower plant has been in operation since the 1980s. The project cost around 72 million US dollars, of which Mexico took 4/7 and the US took 3/7. The dam is around nine kilometers long and is mostly on Mexican territory. Electricity is generated in 2 power plants, one each from the USA and one from Mexico.
Reservoir
The reservoir (Amistad Reservoir or Lake Amistad) is used for irrigation, flood protection, electricity generation and recreation. The plant is operated by the "International Boundary and Water Commission". The lake is bordered by Val Verde County on the American side and the state of Coahuila on the Mexican side .
Recreational use
On the US side of the reservoir is the Amistad National Recreation Area with a variety of recreational opportunities.
