KEXP is a public radio station based in Seattle , Washington . The station sends to FM 90.3 M Hz with 4.7 k W .
KEXP started operations in 1972, then under the callsign KCMU-FM . Since then, the station has been heard on different frequencies. The station has been on the air as KEXP since 2001 . The suffix "EXP" stands for "experimental" (dt. Experimental ) which is the program until today an important characteristic. The station became known as an alternative and indie rock station. Although KEXP is the University of Washington's radio station , only a few students still work for the now professional broadcaster. The official owners are the "Friends of KEXP". The station has around 12,000 sponsoring members, some of whom finance the station with a voluntary contribution. In addition, KEXP receives around 200 individual donations from companies each year. Like all public radio stations, KEXP does not broadcast any advertising, but does name individual financial supporters of the station or certain programs at the beginning of the broadcasts.
KEXP is considered to be the pioneer of “Live Music Sessions” on modern American radio. The station's music archive includes more than 24,000 CDs.
The station was one of the first US stations to set up a live stream and put its real-time playlists online. More than 10,000 users hear KEXP about it every day.
Awards
In 2004, KEXP won the Webby Award for its website.
