WOWO is an independent US radio station based in Fort Wayne , Indiana . It broadcasts a news / talk format and is owned by Pathfinder Communications Corporation .
The station transmits on medium wave (MW) 1190 k Hz as a 50 k W clear channel station . At night, the power is reduced to a fifth. The transmitter and its three transmitter masts are located on Highway 24 in Roanoke between Fort Wayne and Huntington . WOWO broadcasts in parallel in HD radio format.
history
WOWO went on air on March 31, 1925. The current frequency 1190 kHz is occupied by WOWO on March 29, 1941. WOWO was one of the first stops in the Fort Wayne area. It also broadcast a basketball game live as the first station. Before being sold to Pathfinder Communications Corporation , the transmitter was owned by Westinghouse Electric from 1925 to 1982 .
On February 20, 1971, an incident occurred when the North American Aerospace Defense Command in Cheyenne Mountain , Colorado accidentally inserted the wrong tape while testing the Emergency Broadcast System as part of the Emergency Alert System, triggering an Emergency Action Notification . Bob Sievers, who was moderating at the time, had to announce several times that an alarm had occurred, but he did not know what had happened.
