WOI is an American radio station in Des Moines in the US state of Iowa . WOI is the flagship station of the All-News Network of the Iowa Public Radio in the network of the National Public Radio and transmits with 5 k W on the medium wave frequency 640 k Hz . Iowa State University is the owner and operator .

Located in the heart of Iowa, the power, and the flat terrain of the state, WOI can be heard across most of Iowa. The signal also reaches parts of Missouri, Minnesota and Nebraska.

history

On April 18, 1922, Iowa State College received a license to operate a radio station with the callsign WOI. In the course of time, the transmission technology was repeatedly replaced by more powerful systems.

The VHF station WOI-FM started operation on July 1, 1949 with a 100 KW transmitter on 90.1 MHz.

WOI-TV was the second television station to be licensed in Iowa and launched on Channel 4 on February 21, 1950. The station still exists today, but is no longer owned by Iowa State University and now broadcasts a commercial program.
