Ballerina is a French - Canadian computer animation film released in 2016 .

action

The young Félicie lived in France in the 1880s and dreams of one day becoming a ballerina . However, since she is an impoverished orphan and she lacks any education, she has bad cards for it. Together with her good friend, the young inventor Victor, she breaks away from her orphanage in Brittany one day to go to Paris and become a ballerina.

In Paris, Victor begins to work as a secretary for Gustave Eiffel . Félicie succeeds in getting a place in the famous ballet school of the Paris Opera House by pretending to be a daughter from a good family. However, she quickly notices that the training is very tough and, as an outsider, also has problems making new friends. In addition, the main choreographer of the school, Mérante, keeps a watchful eye on the students and throws the worst ballerinas off the course. Félicie soon finds a friend and personal mentor in the cleaning lady Odette, who is a former prima ballerina . However, when the mother of the girl, who she claims to be, learns of the role reversal, Merante Felicie reveals that she may have started badly, but that her progress impresses him and she is still allowed to dance. Should her performance decline, she has to leave the opera. After an argument with Victor, Felicie messed up the audition for the main role of Clara with the prima ballerina Rosita. Although Merante is sorry, she has to go.

Back at the orphanage, she tortures herself through everyday life, convinced that her dream has burst. One night, however, she dreams of herself as a baby and her mother who is dancing with her little daughter in her arms. With renewed courage, with the help of the supervisor, she manages to return to Paris, where she apologizes to Odette at the opera and offers her help with cleaning. While she is sweeping the stage, her rival Camille steps in and the girls begin a kind of dance competition through the entire opera, in which Felicie emerges as the winner in front of the assembled audience. When the girls in front of Merante have to explain why they are dancing, Camille has to admit that she only does it because her mother forces her. Felicie, on the other hand, describes her passion for dancing, whereupon Camille asks Merante to give her competitor the role and apologizes. Beaming with joy, Felicie Victor reports of her success, and the two make up. Suddenly, Camille's mother appears, who, still only concerned with her daughter's career, wants to get rid of Felicie. She flees from her except for the crown of the not yet finished Statue of Liberty and can be saved at the last moment by Victor, encouraged by Camille and a friend.

The friends make it to the performance of The Nutcracker just in time and Felicie can make her dream come true.

criticism

The film received positive reviews from critics.

Die Welt described it as a wonderful dance animation and educationally valuable and said: “Today, breathlessly sleek and perfectionistically exuberant, it is drawn as a motley success story of a fearlessly instinctive high-flyer. And yet always celebrating the magic of classical dance. "

The evening newspaper also praised the film and said: " Ballerina - Never give up your dream, tells a modern fairy tale in a lively and surprising manner."
