  4. a b c Étoile - that is the commonly used abbreviation of Danseur étoile or Danseuse étoile - is the highest level a dancer can reach in the ballet hierarchy of the Paris Opera. Since the number of étoiles in the ballet ensemble of the Opéra National de Paris is never more than ten - there are currently 10 dancers étoiles - it usually takes many years for a dancer to reach this level. Exceptions were Manuel Legris , Nicolas Le Riche , Mathieu Ganio and Mathias Heymann . Manuel Legris became étoile at the request of Nurejew in 1986, five years after his appointment as coryphée , when he was still sujet . Note: The hierarchy of the Paris Opera Ballet is rigid. Nureyev is Nureyev. There was nothing left to appoint. Like Manuel Legris, Mathias Heymann became étoile at the age of 22, Mathieu Ganio at the age of 20, and Nicolas Le Riche at the age of 21.
