Placidus Seitz OSB (born September 13, 1672 in Pössing near Landsberg am Lech as Matthaeus Seitz ; † October 2, 1736 in Ettal Abbey ) was abbot of Ettal Abbey from 1709 .

Life

Matthäus Seitz completed a degree in philosophy in 1689 and became a novice in Ettal Abbey. On 23 July 1690 he resigned his religious vows , took the religious name of Placidus, studied at the University of Salzburg and was in 1696 in Ettal by Johann Franz Eckher of Kapfing and Liechteneck for priests ordained. He was then at the University of Salzburg for Doctor of theology doctorate, taught there 1702-1705 rhetoric , 1706-1709 moral philosophy , history, and speculative theology and wrote dramas for the Salzburg University Theater of the Benedictines. He later became archdeacon and co-ordinator of the estates of the Upper State of Bavaria.

Following the example of Ludwig IV , who, two years after the founding of the Ettal Abbey, had a knight's convent set up in addition to the spiritual abbey in 1332 and knowing the rules of the Collegio dei nobili di Parma founded by Ranuccio I Farnese around 1600 , he also founded Ettal a Collegium Nobilium et Illustrium . The structural condition did not meet the requirements of an educational institution. The monastery is

- Placidus Seitz in a letter dated April 18, 1708

He had the necessary buildings built in the monastery and received 18,000 thalers from the part of the legacy of Maximilian Philipp Hieronymus left for charitable purposes from the imperial administration in Munich . After Maximilian II Emanuel was reinstated as elector , he received a further 6000 thalers from this foundation for similar purposes . In 1711 he opened the Knight's Academy , where mathematics, engineering, building jumps and mines, artillery, shooting with fire rifles and artillery and practical troop leadership were taught, with 12 cavaliers ; up to 1743 between 70 and 80 cavaliers studied. Seitz agreed to support six cavaliers at the monastery cost, while school fees were to be paid for the remaining 400 to 500 thalers . In the course of the Austrian War of Succession , Maria Theresia recalled all Austrian cavaliers in 1743, whereupon the facility burned down in 1744.

Ettal Abbey exercised the right to brew in a brewery built in 1709 . Placidus II operated an aggressive sales policy for the Ettal'sche barley beer. He punished a landlord with an electoral license who served the electoral wheat beer from Schongau. The incident was reported by the district judge of Schongau, Ignaz Xaver Joachim von Filling in Kammerberg (1708–1749) to Johann Maximilian IV. Emanuel von Preysing in Munich, who presented to Charles VII. This decreed a decree delivered on October 21, 1731 the brewing right of the monasteries in the Electorate of Bavaria , with the threat of 1000 Talers penalty, if only one brew would take place, suspended.
