Chandelier ( English for chandelier ) is a song by the Australian singer-songwriter Sia from the album 1000 Forms of Fear , released in 2014, and the album's first single . It was released as a music download on March 17, 2014 and as a CD single in Germany on September 19, 2014 by Sony Music Entertainment . The song was written by Sia and Jesse Shatkin and produced by Shatkin and Greg Kurstin . It belongs to the genre of pop , electro-pop , electronica and R&B .
Lyrically the song deals with a sad topic. Detailed descriptions of the thought processes and the associated demoralization of an alcohol-dependent “party girl” are discussed.
Chandelier received mostly positive reviews from music critics who praised Sia's songwriting and singing. In the US, the single reached # 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became Sia's first single on the Hot 100. At the 2015 Grammy Awards , the song was in the categories Song of the Year , Record of the Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance , as well as that Associated music video nominated in the Best Music Video category.
Music video
For the music video , Sia hired the dancer Maddie Ziegler , who was discovered on the reality show Dance Moms , for whom she developed a dance choreography together with the American choreographer Ryan Heffington. Sia and Daniel Askill directed the film. In the video, Ziegler is dancing with a blonde Sia wig in an abandoned apartment, stepping, jumping, turning and crawling from room to room. Ziegler was given the task of studying the entire choreography in 4 days, but then managed to do it in about 3 hours. The video was released on May 6, 2014 and has been viewed over two billion times on YouTube since then. It won the “Best Choreography” award at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards and was nominated for a Grammy . In addition to the official Director's Cut of the music video, an uncut Director's Cut was created as a so-called Extended Version of the music video, which contains an extended beginning and some additional shots at the end. Furthermore, there is a completely uncut version that shows the entire choreography danced by Ziegler in a single camera shot, a so-called "one-take" video.
Live performances
Sia performed with Chandelier in The Ellen DeGeneres Show on May 19, 2014 together with Maddie Ziegler and presented the music video live on stage, almost true to the original. She sang the song on Late Night with Seth Meyers on June 9, 2014 and Girls' lead actress Lena Dunham danced the choreography. On July 4, 2014, Sia performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on. There Kimmel and his co-host Guillermo Rodriguez learned the dance choreography of the video from Ziegler. On July 30, 2014, Sia presented the song on the VH1 program SoundClash along with her songs Elastic Heart and Big Girls Cry . On February 8, 2015, Sia and Ziegler performed together with the actress and comedian Kristen Wiig and presented the song in the style of the video but with a changed stage design and new choreography at the Grammy Awards 2015 . In all of her appearances, Sia always sings with her back to the camera.
