The Northern Advocate is a daily regional newspaper in New Zealand . Their catchment area is in the northern part of the North Island . The newspaper is based in Whangarei , in the Northland region .

history

In 1875 the Whangarei Comet and Northern Advertiser was founded in Whangarei by the English-born settler George Edwin Alderton and renamed the Northern Advocate and General Advertiser two years later . The paper was originally published weekly, with part in Māori . When competition came up with the Northern Chronicle , they switched to daily publication in 1902. The owner of the Northern Chronicle , Francis Mander , politician businessman and father of the New Zealand writer Mary Jane Mander , took over the Northern Advocate a short time later and probably discontinued the Chronicle in its year of publication.

The Northern Mail was launched in 1908 and the owner of the Mail took over the Northern Advocate in 1914 , but discontinued his own paper that same year.
