Move Your Body ( dt. "Move your body") is a song by Australian singer-songwriter Sia . It is the fourth single from their studio album This Is Acting , which was released on January 16, 2016 . The song's single was released on January 6, 2017. As early as October 2016, the remix by Norwegian DJ and producer Alan Walker, which was included on the deluxe version of their album, brought the track into the charts of selected countries. Influenced by electro-pop and dance-pop , the song was released through Inertia, Monkey Puzzle and RCA .

background

Move Your Body was originally written for Shakira , but Shakira declined to accept it. Sia said in a 2015 interview with Rolling Stone :

"One of the songs was rejected by Shakira, you will hear which one it is, because I sound like Shakira in this one."

- Sia : Rolling Stone

In addition to Sia, the American musician Greg Kurstin , who also produced the song, is behind the song . The final version appeared for the first time as part of their seventh studio album This Is Acting on January 29, 2016. A single release was not planned at this time. The song does not represent any of the songs that could reach the charts through downloads alone. The electro-pop-heavy track, partly with house beats, couldn't attract much attention at the time.

The deluxe version of the album, released on October 21, 2016, featured a remix version of the song by Norwegian producer Alan Walker, who was breaking through at the time . This is designed to be a lot more thrilling and danceable. The remix also received a lot more attention in download portals such as iTunes and was even able to get the song into the official single charts for the first time in Norway and Sweden, among others. This version was also able to prevail in airplay, but this version was not released as a single track.

In mid-December 2016 it was announced that Move Your Body would be released as the fourth single after Alive , Cheap Thrills and The Greatest . The single contains a so-called single mix, which corresponds to the length of the original version, but is much more poppy and has a different sound design. A lyrics video appeared for the first time on January 12, 2017. Similar to the previous one, this is already very creative.

Musical and content

The album version of Move Your Body is 4 minutes and 7 seconds long. The speed is 128 bpm . The striking, aggressive kick during the first verse stands out in particular. Only a few irregular synthesizer background effects accentuate Sia's voice. To start the chorus, the kick takes on a different design and a number of other synthesizer instruments take over. Rhythmically, the song is based on a 4/4 time with some rhythmic additions that occur within the song and partly reflect house and trap sounds. All in all, the album version represents a mixture of electro-pop and dance-pop .

Alan Walker successfully mixed the song

The Alan Walker Remix is also designed in 4/4 time and at 128 bpm. Walker said about the remix

“I always think it's important to develop the Alan Walker sound further and try to get as much inspiration as possible from the entire music industry and, for example, from where it is going. When producing, I try to have an influence on this sound. A good example of this is my remix for 'Move Your Body' by Sia. I tried to do something new with the Alan Walker sound and it was the first time in a long time that I have produced a song that is even faster than 120bpm. "

- Alan Walker : It's All About The Music

In addition to the typical Alan Walker sounds, the basic characteristics of electro and progressive house music are recognizable. The melody singing known from the original in the second part of the chorus was used as a bridge to the drop.

The main thing about the single mix is that the kick was turned down during the verses. A new rhythmic effect has also been added and a piano can be heard. There are also many more instruments in the chorus. During the second part of the chorus, Sia's voice was underlaid with a hall and the echo amplified.

The lyrics sung by Sia describe the lyrical self watching a person whom they describe as attractive. It is particularly focused on the way in which the person moves and adorns this with ideas of adapting to the rhythm and moving together with the person in it. The imagination ends with the request to move the body.

"Your body's poetry, speak to me
Won't you let me be your rhythm tonight?
Move your body, move your body
I wanna be your muse, your music
Let the movement be the rhythm tonight
Move your body, move your body "

- Refrain, original excerpt

“Your body is poetry, talk to me.
Won't you let me be your rhythm tonight
Move your body, move your body
I want to be your muse, your music.
Let the movement be the rhythm tonight.
Move your body, move your body. "

reception

criticism

The reactions to the song were very mixed. Alex McCown-Levy of the AV Club wrote:

“Move Your Body [Sia] tries a straight up Europop / dance floor number, but suffers from a lack of separation from the crowd. It's an obvious club hit, but it also feels a little predictable and safe in the context - pleasant indeed, yes, but too calculated to make any sense of the engagement, comparable to Robyn on autopilot. "

- Alex McCown-Levy : AVClub

Billboard's Carl Wilson described the song as "overwhelming," while Vulture's Lindsay Zolandz thought it was "the most ridiculous song on the album." "Idolators" Kathy Iandoli argues that the song is "a valiant attempt to make things shine more easily. " Said Kitty Empire, a writer for The Guardian, "There's nothing wrong with Move Your Body, as long as you can likes pop as a gusty typhoon. "

Commercial win

Move Your Body was able to advance into the charts for the first time in the form of the Alan Walker remix. In Walker's homeland, the remix reached number 3 on the official singles charts, in Sweden it reached number 57 and in Finland number 8. In addition, in the wake of its success in download portals, it reached number 5 in the US dance club songs . After the release of the single mix in January 2017, the song entered the top 100 in Australia, Belgium, Great Britain, Canada and Italy.

Live performance

The live performances for the song have always been very similar since then. Sia stands a little apart with a big bow on her head, as you know it from the music video for Cheap Thrills . A dancer can be seen on stage, choreographing the song. On a chair in the background sits a slumped, motionless man who only gets up towards the end of the second stanza and shortly before the transition to the chorus begins and makes abrupt movements. The light flickers in very saturated colors, mostly yellow and purple, to match the music.

The stormtroopers seen in the fan-made video

Similar to their previous releases, only one lyrics video was initially announced. However, a fan-made video was released before it was released and received a lot of attention. This shows some Stormtroopers, characters from the Star Wars universe , who roam the streets with a boom box and complete choreographies in different places.

The official lyrics video was released on January 12, 2017. This is based on the single mix and has often been described as very nostalgic since it was set in 1987. It has already been viewed several million times within a week. The main role is shown by Lilliana Ketchman, who was 8 years old at the time , and who is in front of the camera for the American reality show Dance Moms together with Maddie Ziegler , who plays in Sia's other videos . It was shot by Lior Molcho and produced by Chen Biton.

content

Sia's trademark - her bob - can be seen as fan art

The music video is set in an American mall in 1987. It starts with a little girl who wears the typical Sia black and white bob haircut and is taken to a photo op by her family. While the photos are being taken, she tugs at her mother's hand, who is holding her arm. She tears herself free and disappears into the prop room. After she's dressed, she starts walking through the photo sets, annoying both the crew and the cast. However, after a short time they recognize an acting talent in her and begin to adapt to their movements and dance steps for the further recordings and also persuade their parents, who wanted to take her out of circulation, to allow her there for a series of more photos. In the end, she encouraged everyone to dance.
