The bob is a short hairstyle that is cut roughly chin-length in the classic shape. It was at times one of the most popular hairstyles and is suitable for all hair types. The bob became the trend hairstyle in the 1920s . It was popularized again in the 1960s by the English hairdresser Vidal Sassoon .

history

Already in ancient Egypt , both women and men wore a chin-length pageboy hairstyle with straight bangs, similar to the bob . The bob became popular at the beginning of the 1920s as the expression of a new, emancipated image of women, which was spread around the world primarily through the actress Louise Brooks . This hairstyle was also called bob hairstyle or Garçon cut (derived from "garçon", "boy") and was characterized by short hair cut to the earlobe and straight bangs. The hair was worn either straight or wavy ("undulating"). Today, different, up to shoulder-length variations of this cut are called bob.

Between 1950 and 1960, the classic variant that reached down to the jaw became known. The page cut was named after the medieval hairstyles of the English pages at court. Hal Forster's comic figure Prince Eisenherz wears a page cut.

The bob boom

In 1963, the hairdresser Vidal Sassoon created a simplified version of the Garçon cut, which is now known as the “classic bob”. The chin-length hairstyle that Sassoon first cut for actress Nancy Kwan was featured in fashion magazines around the world and sparked a real boom. The very precise cut was characterized above all by the fact that the hair kept falling back into its original position without the need for extensive styling. Significant for this is Sassoon's exclamation "Shake it, Baby!" After he had cut a woman's bob.

present

The shape of the classic bob provided the basis for numerous variations. Common changes include slanted bangs or frayed sides. An asymmetrical cut, it has been by the former singer of Spice Girls , Victoria Beckham , made popular. R&B singer Rihanna also wore an asymmetrical bob in 2007.

The "wrong bob"

A variant of Bob is the "faux Bob" ( false Bob ). Here the hair is not cut off, but the cut with the pinning of the hair is only simulated. Singer Taylor Swift and actress Emma Watson wore a "fake bob".

to form

There are many variations of the bob that are constantly being changed by the fashion designers and hairdressers. The basic versions are:

  • Asymmetrical bob: The bob is cut asymmetrically in the neck area, so the hair falls in different lengths and can also be given further gradations.
  • A-Line Bob: With the A-Line Bob, the side hair is cut straight at chin length. The bangs are also cut straight and don't go too far down to the eyebrows. The bob is named after the straight cut that is reminiscent of the letter A.
  • Graduated Bob: The cut is shorter in the neck, partly with a visible hairline or shaved in a wedge shape
  • Long bob
    Long Bob: shoulder length, parted
  • Mod Bob: stepped, frayed sides, long bangs
  • Mushroom bob: short version, symmetrically cut, lots of volume at the back of the head, bangs and sides are the same length
  • Posh Bob: a type of bob with a side parting and a stepped front section. Usually the hair on one side is worn straight, but the hair section on the other side is styled forward in the classic bob style.
  • Step bobsleigh: With the step bobsleigh, the contours are cut in steps all around, and the length of the bobsleigh can vary.
