Career
Coming from a poor family in the East End of London , Sassoon began working as a "shampoo boy" in London at the age of 14. During the 1950s and 1960s, Sassoon became one of the most sought-after hairdressers in London. The acquaintance of the fashion designer Mary Quant , who is considered to be the inventor of the miniskirt, opened him up to a clientele of models , actresses and high society . He later opened a number of hair salons in the UK and USA under the name Vidal Sassoon and successfully marketed a hair care range named after him .
In his youth, Sassoon, who comes from an old Sephardic family, was part of the 43 Group, a militant anti-fascist organization that campaigned against the movement of Oswald Mosley after World War II , and participated on the Israeli side in the First Arab-Israeli War (1948) part. In later years he was involved in founding several foundations and the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1982).
In 2009, Sassoon was named Commander of the British Empire . He last lived in California and suffered from leukemia .
