Bakary Diallo

Bakary Diallo (born November 11, 1979 in Kati , Koulikoro Mali ; † July 24, 2014 in Gossi , Gourma-Rharous , Timbuktu Mali) was a Malian film director, documentary filmmaker, visual artist and screenwriter.

Life

Diallo initially studied literature at the Lycée Hamadoun DICKO de Sévaré in Mopti-Sévare , which he graduated in 2000. He then decided to take a short course as an assistant director at the Institut Universitaire de Gestion de Bamako. He successfully completed this course as assistant director after two years in 2002 and decided to pursue a career as a documentary filmmaker . Diallo began studying cinematography at the renowned Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers Multimédia Balla Fasséké Kouyaté in Bamako in 2007 . In 2010 he left his homeland Mali and continued his studies in the French Tourcoing in the North Department at Le Fresnoy - National Studio of Contemporary Arts. There he graduated in cinematography in 2010. After graduating, he lived in Roubaix in northern France until his death .

Working as a visual artist and filmmaker

Diallo made his first documentary in 2010 when he co-directed the music documentary El Canto de los Mensajeros alongside Mario Verdú . In the same year he made his first own documentary Les feuilles d'un temps , with which he won a scholarship from the Studio national d'arts contemporains in Tourcoing . In the same year the documentary Les feuilles d'un temps was shown at the 20 ª Semana de Cine Experimental de Madrid and was awarded the Metropolis Prize. In 2011 Diallo was honored with the Les amis du Fresnoy Prize from the Studio national d'arts contemporains for his work Dankumba . Further presentations of his documentation followed; In 2011 his film Les enfants du net was shown at the Camera mobile festival in Valence and the Rencontres africaines de la photographie 2011 in Bamako. Diallo then presented his work Tomo at Dak'art 2012 in Dakar , the Afrique En Mouvement cultural festival in Montreal and the 20 ª Semana de Cine Experimental de Madrid.

On July 24, 2014 Diallo was on his way to Bobo-Dioulasso in Burkina Faso with his friend and former classmate Lorenzo Mbiahou , where he wanted to make a documentary about orphans. Born in Cameroon, Mbiahou assisted him as co-director on his 2011 work Tomo . Both were killed that day in the crash of Air Algérie flight AH5017 in Gossi, Mali.
