Lorenzo Mbiahou

Lorenzo Mbiahou Kemajou (born September 5, 1977 in Yaoundé , Cameroon ; † July 24, 2014 in Gossi , Gourma-Rharous , Timbuktu region , Mali ) was a Cameroonian-Malian documentary filmmaker, visual artist and cameraman.

Life

Mbiahou graduated from the Lycée de Tsinga in Yaoundé before taking a diploma in documentary film at the Cinédoc Formation in Annecy . In 2005 he made his first documentary, Aller Retour En Enfer, about a Dutchman in an African prison. This premiered on June 6, 2005 at the Ecran Noirs in the French cultural center in Yaoundé.

In 2011 he shot the documentary Tomo as co-director and cameraman together with the Malian documentary filmmaker Bakary Diallo . Tomo premiered a year later at Dak'art 2012 in Dakar . In June 2014 he received an award for his work Ngon Ju at the CinéSud Festival 2014 in Saint-Georges-de-Didonne in the Charente-Maritime department .

From 2013 until his death, Mbiahou worked as a documentary filmmaker and cameraman for the French production company VraiVrai Films in Rioux in the Charente-Maritime department . He also lived for a while in French-speaking Switzerland and, in addition to being a Cameroonian, also had a Malian passport.

Mbiahou died on July 24, 2014 in the crash of Air Algérie flight AH5017 in Gossi, Mali. Together with his former student colleague and friend Bakary Diallo, he was on the way to the AfricaDoc Festival in Bobo-Dioulasso in Burkina Faso .
