Betsey Johnson (born August 10, 1942 in Wethersfield , Connecticut , USA ) is an American designer and fashion designer .

Life

Originally trained as a dancer, Johnson soon discovered her interest in costume design . She became known as a top designer for Paraphernalia, one of the hottest fashion boutiques of the 1960s, as well as in connection with the factory scene around Andy Warhol . Here she got together with the musician John Cale of The Velvet Underground , whom she married in 1967 (they divorced in 1971). In 1969 she opened her first own boutique Betsey Bunki Nini in New York . With her unusual, feminine and timeless collections, she managed to assert herself on the market for over four decades. Their designs reflect always on the current culture and subculture Trends: flowery hippie patterns of the 60s about Disco trends towards ethnic motifs and unusual materials. Together with Roy Halston , she was one of the youngest renowned designers of her time. After having worked for various fashion labels and magazines for many years , Betsey decided in 1978 to found her own fashion label.
