Portugal. The Man is a Founded in 2004, American indie rock - band from Wasilla , Alaska .

Band name

The band name is the result of the consideration that a name must be personal and can stand for a group, a person or even a country. No band member has been to Portugal so far , the decision was purely arbitrary. The addition "The man" should mean that the band is something like an alter ego . "The decision was made spontaneously after the proposal had been made and now one would have the need for explanation at every interview," said the band members in unison.

history

Portugal. The Man was founded in 2004 by John Gourley and Zach Carothers from the recently disbanded hardcore punk band Anatomy of a Ghost , Wesley Hubbard, Nick Klein and Harvey Tumbleson in Wasilla. The band members decided to go to Portland to be closer to the US band scene. There they lived for a year and a half from smaller jobs that brought in just enough money to keep the band funded. In 2005 they met Jason Sechrist, who has been a drummer ever since .

Her debut album Waiter: "You Vultures!" was released on January 24, 2006 by Fearless Records and has been described as a mixture of hardcore punk, soul , progressive rock , emo , post rock and electric rock . It reached sixth place in the 2006 year-end charts of Visions magazine and 35th place in Intro . The EP It’s Complicated Being a Wizard , published in 2007, moves more in the electronic realm and makes extensive use of sequencer tones . The second album Church Mouth , which was released shortly afterwards, contains no electronics and is clearly inspired by rock of the 60s.

Portugal. The Man has toured with bands like The Fall of Troy , Damiera , Action Action , The Matches , Gatsby's American Dream , Horse the Band , Circa Survive , The Black Keys , RX Bandits and Casper .

On September 5, 2008, the band released their third album, Censored Colors.

On July 17, 2009, the band released their fourth album The Satanic Satanist. It was produced by Paul Q. Kolderie , Adam Taylor and Anthony Saffery . In the run-up to the release, she already presented a new song called People Say on the show FuelTV . A purely acoustic interpretation of the title of The Satanic Satanist appeared under the title The Majestic Majesty. The album is only available online or is included in the special edition of The Satanic Satanist . In early 2010 she released the album American Ghetto, followed by the album In the Mountain, in the Cloud on July 19, 2011 .

The band announced on Instagram on February 26, 2013 that their upcoming album would be titled Evil Friends . In Germany it was released on May 31, 2013 and in the USA on June 4, 2013 on iTunes , with the single Evil Friends being available for download beforehand. For the new album, the band worked with producer Danger Mouse , who has already produced albums from Gorillaz , The Black Keys and Beck .

On June 16, 2017, the album Woodstock was released , from which the single Feel It Still was released. An interactive music video was produced. The band was recognized for the song at the Grammy Awards 2018 in the category " Best Pop Performance ".
