Calenberger Bergland (Lower Saxony)
Calenberg mountains
Location Calenberger Bergland
state Lower Saxony , North Rhine-Westphalia

The Calenberger Bergland is a layered landscape characterized by a fine mosaic of depressions, layer ridges of the Jura and more compact mountain ranges of the chalk on the extreme northern edge of the low mountain range and the Lower Saxon Uplands in the historic Calenberger Land in Lower Saxony , to a very small extent in the west also in North Rhine-Westphalia . It is bounded by the Porta Westfalica in the west, the valley of the Weser upstream to Hameln in the southwest, the Alfelder Bergland with Ith and Hils in the south, Springe in the east, Barsinghausen in the northeast and Stadthagen in the northwest - all of the places mentioned are just outside the Natural space. The central location inside is Bad Münder .

Rough assignment and neighboring landscapes

The Calenberger Bergland naturally forms the main unit 378 within the Greater Region 3rd Order of the Lower Saxony Uplands and the main unit group 37 Weser-Leine-Bergland .

It borders in the northwest with the Bückeberg foreland (522), in the northeast to the southeast with the Calenberger Lößbörde (521) - both parts of the Lower Saxony Börden (52), which in turn are part of the Lößbörden on the southern edge of the North German lowlands . In the south-west it borders on the Rinteln-Hamelner Weserland (366) at the valley of the Weser around Rinteln and Hameln , to the south it goes over to the Alfelder Bergland (377) with Ith and Hils, which continues to the south-east .

Together with the Alfelder Bergland (377) and the Innerstebergland (379) that adjoins it further east , it forms the self-contained landscape of the Lower Weser-Leine Bergland , which also includes the Rinteln-Hamelner Weserland (366) to the south-west can. Geomorphologically, this landscape differs significantly from the southern part of the Weser-Leine Bergland, which is characterized by the red sandstone , as well as from the closed hills of the Muschelkalk and Keuper of the Upper Weserbergland, which adjoins southwest (36).

Main mountain ranges

On the northern edge of the low mountain range threshold in the Calenberger Bergland, starting in the west, the following mountain ranges are lined up (heights above sea level ; the following mountain ranges indented "inward"):

The Deister-Süntel valley lies between the mountain ranges in the west up to and including the Bückeberg and those connecting to the east from the Deister .

While the mountain ranges Süntel and Wesergebirge in the west are also included in the Weserbergland (W), the eastern elevations Osterwald, Nesselberg and Kleiner Deister are also assigned to the Leinebergland (L).

Natural structure

The Calenberger Bergland was defined in the Handbook of Natural Spatial Structure of Germany in the first mapping from 1954 as Kalenberger Bergland and, based on those boundaries, is specified in the 5th edition of the Handbook from 1957 with an area of 585 km². Sofie Meisel , who had also written the corresponding section in the manual, gave a more detailed breakdown in the single sheets 1: 200,000 in the years 1959 ( sheet 85 Minden ) and 1960 ( sheet 86 Hannover ). In contrast to the map from 1954, the Kleinenbremener Basin is added to the natural area, while on the older map this was added to the Bückeberg foreland, to which it is geomorphologically more appropriate due to its low heights, which is why the main unit already ended west of the Harrl. The Federal Agency for Nature Conservation has determined an area of 618 km² based on the individual sheets (i.e. with the Kleinenbremen basin).

All sub-natural areas of the Calenberger Bergland are given below; In the case of mountain ranges, the altitude above sea level is also given as well as the rock ( Muschelkalk , Keuper , Jura , chalk ):

  7. a b The southeastern Kleine Deister is commonly attributed to the Osterwald, from whose core landscape it differs geologically clearly; on the Hohe Stuhl , near the junction to the Osterwald, 391  m in the Jura are reached, see map excerpt on DTK 50 ( memento of the original from December 9, 2014 in the Internet Archive ) Info: The archive link was inserted automatically and has not yet been checked. The highest mountain of the southeastern Kleine Deister is therefore the southern tip of the Holenberg with a good 360  m , see map section on AK 2.5 ( memento of the original from December 9, 2014 in the Internet Archive ) Info: The archive link was automatically inserted and not yet checked.
