Buildings

  • The Apelern Church , a two-aisled hall church, built around 1150. The church tower was used as a defense tower. The western porch contains the crypt (mausoleum) of the von Münchhausen family.
  • The moated castle Münchhausen was redesigned around 1560–61 by the master builder Jakob Kölling for the couple Börries von Münchhausen (1515–1583), Drost zu Lauenau , and Heilwig von Büschen-Oldendorf (1537–1599) and largely rebuilt, the 1583 also with began to build the Münchhausenhof in Hessisch Oldendorf . (Börries' maternal uncle, the mercenary leader Claus von Rottorp , had built the neighboring moated castle Hülsede in 1548 ; Börries himself made his fortune as a cavalry master in the mercenary army of his cousin, Colonel Hilmar von Münchhausen , especially in 1557 at the Battle of St. Quentin ). In 1594, the three sons of Börries and Heilwig shared the inheritance: Claus received Apelern and Nienfeld , Otto Lauenau (where he built Schwedesdorf Castle) and Ludolf the maternal inheritance in Oldendorf as well as property in Remeringhausen , where he also built a new building. The moated castle was extended by a half-timbered building in the 18th century and is still a residence of the Barons von Münchhausen, who have lived in Apelern since 1370 . The Hanoverian Prime Minister Alexander von Münchhausen lived here until 1886 and bequeathed the estate to a cousin. After the death of Hans Georg von Münchhausen in 1952, the castle changed from ownership of the white line to an adopted son from the black line (which had split up around 1250) in order to inherit the oldest family seat after almost 600 years within the male line of the Münchhausen family.
  • Hammerstein Castle , originally part of the Münchhausen property, built in 1590 by Anton Wietersheim , has been in the possession of the Barons von Hammerstein -Gesmold since 1673 .
