etymology
The origin of the name Luhden has not been fully clarified and several attempts have been made to interpret it. However, today's linguistic research assumes that the name comes from Old Saxon and can be derived from "hlüd", dialect "lut" = "loud". Another approach, also from Old Saxon, traces the name Luhden back to the formation of a dental suffix to the root "leu-", lut ". Accordingly, the place name could be translated as" dirt "or" mud ".
The linguists, however, agree on the origin of the name of the Luhden district of Schermbeck . They interpret it as a combination of the two words "Scherm", which means "pure" or "clean", and the Old Saxon word "Beeke", which means "Bach".
