Anthony Powell (costume designer)

Anthony Powell (born June 2, 1935 in Chorlton-cum-Hardy , Manchester , England ) is a British costume designer . Powell's costumes have received numerous awards, including three Academy Awards .

Life

Powell studied at the Central School of Art in London . At the beginning of his career, Powell worked as an assistant to well-known designers, including Cecil Beaton . He worked exclusively for theatrical productions until the late 1960s and received the Tony Award in 1963 for the costumes of The School for Scandal in a production by John Gielgud . At the same time he was also responsible for the production design and was also nominated for the Tony Award as a production designer. In 1969 Powell worked for the first time in the film industry and designed the costumes for The Fall of the Sun Empire . In 1972 he won his first Oscar for the costumes of trips with my aunt , two more Academy Awards followed in 1978 and 1980. He began to work several times for Roman Polański and Steven Spielberg and designed the clothes for box office hits like Frantic and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom . He also worked with Polanski at the theater and was responsible for setting up Polanski's production of Amadeus .

In 2003 he was made an honorary doctorate from the University of Greenwich .
