Death on the Nile (Death on the Nile) is a British crime drama from the year 1978 by John Guillermin . It is a film adaptation of the 1937 novel by Agatha Christie .

action

After the affluent American Lady Linnet Ridgeway and the rather poor Simon Doyle got married, they spend their honeymoon in Egypt. Also present is Jacqueline, known as Jackie, Linnet's former best friend and previously Simon's fiancée. Jackie is obviously very angry. She pursues the two and seeks revenge. When Linnet is almost struck by a stone while visiting a temple, the investigations of the detective Hercule Poirot , who happens to be in Egypt , begin . He doesn't believe that the rock fall is a coincidence, but rather a cold-blooded assassination attempt.

During his further research on a Nile steamer, Poirot learns that not only Jackie but also various other fellow travelers do not speak well on Linnet. There would be B. Her maid Louise Bourget, who wants to quit and marry, but needs money from Linnet Doyle, the drunk and sex-obsessed writer Salome Otterbourne, who tries in vain to dissuade Linnet from a libel suit, the young salon communist Ferguson, who she for a parasite holds, Mrs. van Schuyler, a society lady who is keen on Linnet's pearl necklace, whose partner Bowers, whose father was ruined by the Ridgeways, Dr. Ludwig Bessner, a Swiss doctor whose reputation has ruined her, and Pennington, her American lawyer who wants to cheat on her. So the list of possible perpetrators of the assassination attempt is very long.

A few days later, Jackie and Simon have a heated argument, as a result of which Jackie shoots Simon in the leg with a pistol. You bring the distraught Jackie to her cabin and make sure that she is not alone - Miss Bowers, the nurse, stays with Jackie the whole time. Soon after, Dr. Bessner looked after and brought to his cabin.

The following morning, Linnet Doyle is found dead in her bed by her maid, Louise, with a gunshot wound to the head. The tip of her index finger is stained with blood, and there is a large bloody red J on the wall by the bed that could mean Jackie. However, Linnet cannot have written it herself, as she must have died instantly. Poirot concludes that this initial must have been left by the murderer. Now the investigation begins, and except for Simon and Jackie, none of the other passengers seem to have an alibi - all had the opportunity to take the gun and later commit the deed. Then Louise is found with her throat cut, a tiny remnant of banknotes in her hand. She obviously blackmailed the killer. Mrs. Otterbourne, who in turn saw Louise's killer and loudly announced this, is killed in Poirot's presence with a shot in the head through the open cabin door with a shot in the face with Andrew Pennington's revolver before she can name a name. The still smoking revolver is on the railing and the shooter escaped unseen.

Poirot calls everyone involved in the salon and finally solves the tricky case: the crime was meticulously prepared, and Simon and Jackie are joint perpetrators: their shot in Simon's leg was only faked so that Simon had to be considered immobile at the time of the crime. Simon had dribbled red ink from a vial of his wife's nail polish on the handkerchief to make it look like he had been hit and was bleeding. Simon carried out the murder immediately after this apparent injury in order to actually injure himself accordingly so that the later arriving Dr. Ludwig Bessner was able to confirm the injury. The maid Louise wanted to blackmail the perpetrators as a witness and was then taken by Jackie with a scalpel to Dr. Bessner's murdered. Mrs. Otterbourne was also later shot - also by Jackie - as an accomplice. After the presentation of these facts at the grand finale, Poirot resorted to a bluff in the absence of evidence, the so-called moulage wax test to identify powder residues in the skin for the purpose of assigning cartridges. This should be able to prove Simon's perpetration with the last two shots from the four-barreled pistol, whereupon Jackie first shoots Simon and then himself with the murder weapon.

Locations

The shooting took place almost exclusively at the original locations:

However, the plot does not exactly follow the geography (and thus the cruises that were common back then).

The locations also differ from the novel. There the journey goes from Aswan via Abu Simbel to Wadi Halfa . Cruises between Aswan and Abu Simbel are still carried out today, but do not cross the Egyptian-Sudanese border to Wadi Halfa. However, it is possible to take a ferry from Aswan to Wadi Halfa.

Reviews

“John Guillermin implemented the Agatha Christie novel routinely, but with some length and successfully tried to find a great star cast. Sir Peter Ustinov has his first appearance here as Poirot. The British all-rounder can look back on a long career as a cinema and theater actor, director and author. In the 60s, two Oscars crowned the high point of his career and in the 70s he played himself into the hearts of the audience as master detective Poirot. "

“An Agatha Christie film adaptation that does not understand how to free the novel from its clumsy structure and adapt it to suit the cinema. Thanks to Peter Ustinov as a detective and the gathering of many well-performing stars, the result was a shocked-amusing chamber play with some idle time. "

"Stylish puzzle fun with a lot of star shine"
