Inderjeet Singh Johar (born February 16, 1920 in Talagang , † March 10, 1984 in Bombay ) was an Indian actor, director and screenwriter.

life and career

IS Johar originally studied politics and economics before deciding to act in the late 1940s. He made his film debut in Roop K. Shorey's Ek Thi Ladki (1949), for which he also wrote the screenplay. As a screenwriter he was involved in Baldev Raj Chopra's directorial debut Afsana (1951) and his successful Chandni Chowk (1954). In the following three decades, Johar became a well-known actor in Hindi films , playing mostly comedic roles. For his appearance in the film Johny Mera Naam , Johar won the 1971 Filmfare Award for Best Comedian . He also appeared in a number of films with comedian Mehmood . His supporting role as Gasim in Lawrence of Arabia made him internationally known , where he is first rescued from the desert by Peter O'Toole in two of the most dramatic scenes of the film and later has to be executed. As a somewhat dumb ship manager, Johar was part of the international star cast of the Agatha Christie film adaptation Death on the Nile with Peter Ustinov in 1978 .

In addition to his roles in over 100 films, Johar has also directed and scripted a total of 14 films. Johar was controversial as provocative comedy director because he brought about frequent political allusions in his movies, his movie satire criticized Nasbandi (1978), the sterilization policy of Indira Gandhi . His films also dealt with sexuality, which was still a taboo in India at the time. In his private life he was also a staunch liberal and married five times. He died in 1984 at the age of 64.
