John Knatchbull, 7th Baron Brabourne

John Ulick Knatchbull, 7th Baron Brabourne , (born November 9, 1924 in London , † September 22, 2005 in Kent ) was a British nobleman and film producer .

Life

Knatchbull was the younger son of Michael Knatchbull, 5th Baron Brabourne , and his wife Doreen Geraldine Browne. He was educated at Eton College . In the Second World War he fought in north-western Europe from 1943, where he was wounded. In 1946 he retired from military service with the rank of Captain of the Coldstream Guards . When his older brother Norton Knatchbull, 6th Baron Brabourne , died childless in 1943, he inherited his title of nobility, which was also linked to a seat in the House of Lords . He was a member of this until the House of Lords Act 1999 came into force .

In 1946 Knatchbull married Patricia Knatchbull, 2nd Countess Mountbatten of Burma , daughter of Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma . He had seven children with her. In an IRA attack on Earl Mountbatten in 1979, Knatchbull's 14-year-old son Nicholas and his mother died; he, his wife, and their son Timothy survived injured.

Knatchbull began making films in the late 1950s. His first production was in 1958 The Tiger's Paw . Films like Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet followed , Sidney Lumet's Murder on the Orient Express (1974) and David Lean's Trip to India (1984) with Alec Guinness . He preferred to produce Agatha Christie films and other literary films , for example by Charles Dickens , EM Forster or William Shakespeare .

Knatchbull was nominated for an Oscar for Romeo and Juliet and Trip to India , and for Trip to India also for the British Academy Film Award . With the help of his father-in-law, who was head of the Royal Navy in the 1950s and 1960s , Knatchbull was also able to make several films set in the maritime field. In later years he was the director of Thames Television , a private television broadcaster. He was also a member of the management team at Thorn EMI .

Knatchbull died in 2005; his title of nobility was inherited by his eldest son Norton Knatchbull, 8th Baron Brabourne , who has also been 3rd Earl Mountbatten of Burma since his mother's death in 2017 .
