action
The small English village of St. Mary Mead, home of Miss Marple , is delighted when a major American film company decides to direct a film there that will depict the relationship between Mary Queen of Scots and Elizabeth I , played by famous actresses Marina Rudd and Lola Brewster tells. Marina arrives with her husband Jason, the director. When she realizes that Lola will also be in the film, she reacts choleric because Lola and Marina can't stand each other.
Marina has received death threats. Shortly thereafter, a fan of Marina's Heather Babcock dies at a party at the mansion after drinking a poisoned cocktail that was apparently meant for Marina. Immediately before that, Heather had told Marina in an extensive monologue about an earlier encounter in a theater where Heather had kissed Marina. Everyone now believes Marina should have been the real victim, but Inspector Craddock, who is handling the case, is unsure, which is why he turns to his aunt, Miss Jane Marple, for help.
A service Botin says during the investigation that Marina had accepted a petrified expression while talking with Heather and staring at a painting of a Madonna and Child by Bellini. In the further course Marina claims to have recognized a coffee offered to her as being poisoned and then refuses to enjoy it. In fact, arsenic is detected in it.
In the end it turns out that Marina herself is the perpetrator and has faked the death threats and the poison attack on herself. She used to have a disabled child after developing rubella during pregnancy . During Heather's monologue, Marina became aware of the connection between her hitherto unexplained infection, whereupon she decided to kill Heather. In the end, Marina commits suicide.

Trivia
Pierce Brosnan made an appearance on the side of Elizabeth Taylor for only a few seconds, around the 70th minute of the movie.
The original title The Mirror Crack'd refers to a line from The Lady of Shalott by Alfred Tennyson (1st Baron Tennyson) , which is quoted by Miss Marple: The mirror crack'd from side to side. This was also the (longer) title of the novel by Agatha Christie.
Reviews
"Comfortable, unexciting Agatha Christie film, which tries to make up for the lack of tension with a top-class cast: since the story takes place in the film setting, a number of screen stars of bygone times get the opportunity to vain, smug appearances."
“In this semi-exciting film adaptation based on Agatha Christie, Angela Lansbury alludes to the memory of Margaret Rutherford , who embodied the sprightly amateur detective in the 1960s. Lansbury is best known worldwide through the TV series Murder is Her Hobby . What is remarkable, however, is the international star cast. "
“The film has a problem: Angela Lansbury is not Margaret Rutherford. Because as well as she plays, Rutherford's embodiment of Miss Marple will always be unmatched. And the supporting roles also remain astonishingly pale for an Agatha Christie film. It is true that there is an enormous cast of stars, but Elizabeth Taylor and Kim Novak are far from the shape of earlier days. "
