Ruby Anne Barnhill (born July 16, 2004 in Knutsford , Cheshire , England ) is a British actress and voice actress . It was developed by the American US director Steven Spielberg for which of DreamWorks SKG co-produced Disney - Fantasy Film Big Friendly Giant - BFG discovered.

Life

Ruby Barnhill began at the age of ten years with the Acting in six episodes of the BBC - Drama - Children Series 4 O'Clock Club as Isobel . In 2014 she was discovered by the American film director and film producer Steven Spielberg for his adaptation of the children's book Sophiechen and the Giant (The BFG) written by the English author Roald Dahl , who died in 1990 . In the film, she plays the lead role of the orphan Sophie, alongside Mark Rylance , who embodies the friendly giant . Barnhill was selected for the role after an eight-month search among 2,000 applicants, and Steven Spielberg said when announcing Barnhill's engagement that he felt that Roald Dahl himself had discovered Ruby himself. Spielberg continued: "We found a wonderful Sophie in Ruby Barnhill". For this role, Barnhill received a salary of 85,000 US dollars. The BFG celebrated its world premiere on May 14, 2016 out of competition at the 69th Cannes International Film Festival . Barnhill also works as a voice actress and voiced the English version of the title role Mary in the Japanese cartoon Mary and the Witch's Flower . Furthermore, she was cast for the title role in the English language version of the German Studio 100 film animation Princess Emmy .

Barnhill lives with her parents and younger sister in the county of Cheshire in England and is a member of the local youth theater. Her father is the British actor Paul Barnhill.
